CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s basketball won its first ACC game of the season with a 77-70 win over Wake Forest on Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena.

The Cavaliers improved to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons fell to 8-8 overall and 0-3 in the league.

Wake opened the game with four straight points, but UVa rebounded with 11 consecutive points. After a few traded baskets, the Cavaliers went on a 14-0 run to go ahead by 17 points, 30-13 with 3:33 to go in the half. Virginia held a 12-point edge at halftime, 35-23.

In the second half, Virginia re-built its lead to 19 points, 44-25 with 17:14 to go, but the Deacons battled back. Holding just a four point lead, 63-59 with 2:57 to play, UVa held on for the win by converting 22-of-23 free throws in the second half.

Junior point guard Sharneé Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) and sophomore Lyndra Littles (Washington, D.C.) led the Cavaliers with 17 points each. Zoll finished a perfect 12-of-12 from the line, tying the school record for perfect free throw percentage in a game, and pushed her consecutive streak to 21 makes. She also dished out a game-high nine assists, just one shy of a double-double performance. Senior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) racked up her third double-double of the season (seventh of her career) with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) rounded out the UVa double-figure scoring with 15 points.

Yolanda Lavender paced WFU with 27 points. Alex Tchangoue followed with 20 points, and Corinne Groves finished with 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Wake, 442-41.

Virginia hosts Boston College at JPJA on Sunday, Jan. 14. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
