GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia freshman Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Monday.
Wright helped through three ACC games on the week to open conference play. At No. 2 North Carolina, she added 17 points and seven rebounds. In the win over Wake Forest on Thursday, Wright had 15 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from the line. She also grabbed five boards and blocked a shot in 32 minutes of work. In the overtime win over Boston College on Sunday, Wright finished with 13 points, including the game-winning three-pointer. She also stole the ball four times.
After 17 games, Wright stands second in team scoring with 14.0 ppg. In ACC games only, Wright is UVa’s leading scorer with 15.0 ppg. The preseason ACC Rookie of the Year has started all 17 games.
The ACC weekly honor is the fifth for Wright this season. The frosh has also earned the Conference honor on Nov. 20, Dec. 4, Dec. 11, and Jan 2.
Virginia (12-5 overall, 2-1 ACC) travels to No. 1 Maryland on Friday, Jan. 19. The Regional Sports Network will televise the game live, beginning at 7 p.m.
