Cavaliers Have Strong First Day at Virginia Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis opened their 2007 season with a strong opening day performance at the Virginia Invitational at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers went 8-1 in singles play and 3-1 in doubles play.
Recording straight-set singles wins for the Cavaliers were first-years Britney Larson (Orchard Park, N.Y.), Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla,), Kristin McVitty (Woodland Hills, Calif.), sophomores Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Lara Alexander (London, England), junior Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas), and senior Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.). In addition, second-year Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) won her match in three sets.
In doubles, the Cavalier teams of Yahner and Larson, McVitty and Stevens, and Hammond and Alexander posted wins for the Cavaliers.
The six-team, three-day event, continues Saturday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s head Sports Club. Saturday’s play starts at 10:00 a.m. and admission is free.
