The Game
Virginia enters Sunday’s conference game against Wake Forest with a 10-6 overall record and a 2-2 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 103-91 win over Maryland (Jan. 16) at the John Paul Jones Arena.
Wake Forest is 9-8 overall and 1-4 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons have lost their last three games and are coming off a 62-40 loss to Duke (Jan. 18) in Durham, N.C.

The Series vs. Wake Forest
Wake Forest leads the series with Virginia 63-58. The Demon Deacons have won 17 of the last 26 games in the series, including four of the last six. UVa snapped a two-game losing streak to Wake Forest with a 75-73 win (Feb. 4) at University Hall in the only meeting between the two teams last season.
The Demon Deacons swept a pair of games in 2004-05, winning 89-70 (Jan. 2) in Charlottesville in the first meeting and 90-68 (Feb. 27) in Winston-Salem. The Cavaliers’ loss in the first meeting snapped a four-game home winning streak over Wake. It also halted a steak of eight consecutive wins by the home team in the series.
The two teams split the 2003-04 series. The Deacs registered a 91-78 win (Jan. 31) in the first meeting in Winston-Salem, while Virginia won 84-82 (Mar. 2) in Charlottesville.
Neither team has won more than two consecutive games in the series in 10 years. Wake won three consecutive games in the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons. After splitting the regular season series in 1995-96, the Demon Deacons won 70-60 (Mar. 8) in the 1996 ACC Tournament. Wake then swept the 1996-97 series, winning 58-54 (Jan. 15) in Winston-Salem and 66-60 (Feb. 22) in Charlottesville.
The Cavaliers won 21 of the last 28 games played at University Hall, including five of the final six. Wake Forest has won six of the last 13 games in Charlottesville dating back to the 1992-93 season. Prior to the 89-70 loss to Wake in the 2004-05 season, the Demon Deacons’ previous victory in Charlottesville was an 80-75 win (Mar. 2) in the 1999-00 season. Virginia leads 35-19 in games played in Charlottesville.
Tough To Shoot Well vs. Wake Forest
Virginia has had a rough time on the offensive end against Wake Forest since the 1989-90 season (UVa is 15-21 vs. Wake Forest since 1989-90). The Cavaliers have shot 46 percent or better against Wake Forest just 10 times in the last 37 games. Eight of the 10 games resulted in Virginia wins with the two losses coming when UVa shot 52.0 percent (26-50) in a 75-71 loss (Feb. 23, 2003) in Winston-Salem and in 2003-04 when the Cavaliers shot 50.0 percent (31-62) in a 91-78 loss (Jan. 31) in Winston-Salem.
In the second meeting of the 2003-04 season, the Cavaliers shot 51.6 percent (33-64) in an 84-82 victory (Mar. 2) in Charlottesville.
In the first meeting of the 2002-03 season, an 85-75 Virginia win (Jan. 23), the Cavaliers also bettered 50 percent shooting in the game – 30-59 for 50.8 percent.
UVa has shot 41.9 percent from the floor and averaged 67.5 points per game against Wake Forest since 1989-90.
Similarly, the Cavalier defense has been almost as stingy as Wake’s. The Deacons have made 44.6 percent of their field goal attempts over the last 37 meetings and have averaged 70.7 points per game.
Wake Forest topped 50 percent shooting from the floor nine times since 1989-90. Last season, the Deacs shot 51.0 percent (25-49) from the floor and it marked the first time since the 1989-90 season they lost to UVa when shooting 50 percent or better from the field.
No Rest on Sundays
The Cavaliers have seven Sunday games this season, including today’s game against Wake Forest. UVa played three Sunday games in November – Arizona (Nov. 12), Morgan State (Nov. 19), and Maryland Eastern Shore (Nov. 26). The Cavaliers’ lone Sunday contest in December was against NC State (Dec. 3), which marked the fourth consecutive week UVa had a Sunday game.
UVa has three Sunday games in January – Stanford (Jan. 7), Wake Forest (Jan. 21), and Clemson (Jan. 28).
The Clemson contest is the only away Sunday game for UVa this season.
Thus far, the Cavaliers are 4-1 this season when playing on Sunday.
