GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia senior guard J.R. Reynolds (Roanoke, Va.) has been selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for his play in the Cavaliers’ victories over Maryland (Jan. 16) and Wake Forest (Jan. 21) at the John Paul Jones Arena.
Reynolds is the third different Virginia player to earn the honor this season. Sean Singletary (Philadelphia, Pa.) has twice been named ACC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and Mamadi Diane (Potomac, Md.) has earned the honor once. It’s the first time three different Cavaliers have earned the honor in the same season since 1982-83 when Jimmy Miller, Ralph Sampson (three times) and Othell Wilson (twice) received the award.
Reynolds scored 57 points, had nine rebounds and eight assists in the Cavaliers’ two conference victories last week. He was 15-31 (48.4 percent) from the field, including 6-13 (46.2 percent) from three-point range, and 21-22 (95.5 percent) from the free throw line.
In the Cavaliers’ 103-91 victory over Maryland, Reynolds scored 17 points, had seven rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes of action.
In Virginia’s 88-76 win over Wake Forest, Reynolds scored a career-high 40 points, had four assists and two rebounds in 33 minutes of playing time. His 40 points are the most scored in a game by a player in the ACC this season. He scored 20 points in each half against the Demon Deacons. Reynolds was 12-18 from the field, including 6-8 from three-point range, and he made all 10 of his free throw attempts in the game.
Miami’s Dwayne Collins and Duke’s Jon Scheyer shared ACC Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week honors.
