CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 8 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team opened up its home schedule on Friday night, defeating No. 13 Notre Dame, 6-1, and improving their overall record to 2-0 on the season.

“I thought we came out and played well in all three doubles matches,” head coach Brian Boland said. “I think our doubles teams are really starting to come together and gel as teams. We were able to use the momentum from doubles and take it into singles.”

Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead as they swept the three doubles contests. At No. 1 doubles, the No. 7 ranked duo of Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) battled back for an 8-4 win over No. 11 ranked Ryan Keckley and Sheeva Parbhu. Virginia clinched the opening point as Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England.) defeated Brett Helgeson and Barry King, 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece.) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Stephen Bass and Andrew Roth at the No. 3 position.

The Cavaliers met some heavy resistance early in the singles matches but were able to win five of the six matches. Devvarman, the No. 8 singles player in the country, defeated No. 14 Bass 7(8)-6(6), 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Huey bested No. 30 Parbhu at the No. 2 position, 7(7)-6(2), 7-5 to clinch the victory over the Cavaliers. First-year Barrick continued his strong start with a victory over King at the No. 4 position, 6-4, 7-5. Inglot recorded a win in dominant fashion over Helgeson, 6-2, 6-2. Notre Dame’s Keckley won the only match of the evening for the Fighting Irish by defeating Angelinos at the No. 5 position, 7(7)-6(1), 6-2. Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) came back from a set down to defeat Roth and cap off the victory, 0-6, 7(7)-6(1), 6-0.

“I was especially pleased with Somdev and Treat,” added Boland. “They showed a lot of leadership, and really picked us up when we needed to energy in singles. We are looking forward to a tough challenge on Sunday against an excellent Illinois team.”

Virginia continues its home schedule this Sunday with match at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. No. 5 ranked Illinois visits Charlottesville, with match time set at noon.
