RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened its 2007 campaign with a 6-1 win over No. 72 Richmond Friday night at the Country Club of Virginia. The No. 25 Cavaliers (1-0) started their season-opening eight-match road trip with a victory, while the Spiders, the preseason Atlantic 10 favorites, fell to 0-1.
Virginia opened the match by sweeping the doubles contests. The freshman duo of Kristen McVitty (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) topped Beatrice Grasu and Robin Carter 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 position, Brintney Larson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) topped Pamela Duran and Ashlee Vosters 8-6. Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) and Lara Alexander (London, England) scored an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Jelena Zivanovic and Xenia Schneider.
The Cavaliers continued that momentum into singles, where they won five matches in straight sets. McVitty topped Grasu 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3, Stevens defeated Carter 6-1, 6-1. Yahner won at the No. 4 position, downing Vosters 6-2, 6-1. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) won her match at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-4 over Schneider, and Hammond cruised past Jessica Hubbard, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. In the final match on the courts, Duran got the Spiders’ only point of the match, defeating Larson 6-3, 1-6, 10-5 at the No. 1 position.
“Everyone on our team played at a very high level tonight,” head coach Mark Guilbeau said. “Overall, it was a very good start to our season. We thought Richmond also played well tonight. They are a talented team and will have a lot of success this season.”
The Cavaliers continue their season-opening road trip on Sunday, as they visit No. 26 William & Mary.
