WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2007 campaign, falling to No. 26 William & Mary 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the McCormick-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Cavaliers fall to 1-1 on the year, while the Tribe improves to 2-0.

In doubles, the Cavaliers got a win from Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) and Lara Alexander (London, England) topped Klaudyna Kasztelaniec and Lauren Sabacinski 8-0 at the No. 2 position. However, the Tribe won at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to take the opening point.

The Tribe won the first four singles matches off the court to take a 5-0 lead before Virginia won the final two matches. Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) upset No. 59 Kasztelaniec 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles for Virginia, while Hammond topped Sabacinski 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 6 position.

“Give a lot of credit to William & Mary, they outplayed us today,” head coach Mark Guilbeau said. “Both (assistant coach) Troy (Porco) and I felt that we need to learn to get better in terms of playing strategically on the courts. William & Mary forced some of this on us, but we didn’t execute as well as we need to today.”

The Cavaliers travel to Marshall next weekend to play the Thundering Herd, along with Davidson.
