CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior tennis player Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week conference officials announced Monday. Devvarman went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles for the week, as Virginia opened the dual match season with three victories.
In the season opening 7-0 win at William & Mary, Devvarman, ranked No. 8 in the ITA singles rankings, downed Colin O’Brien 6-3, 6-0. On Friday, Devvarman led Virginia to a 6-1 win over No. 13 Notre Dame with a 7-6, 6-1 win over No. 14 Stephen Bass. He capped off the week Sunday with a 4-6, 7-6, 10-8 win over No. 23 Kevin Anderson in the Cavaliers’ 5-2 win over fifth ranked Illinois.
Devvarman and fellow junior Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) also notched a pair of ranked doubles wins this past week. Against William & Mary, the duo defeated No. 30 O’Brien and Alex Cojanu 8-3. Two days later, they topped the Irish 11th ranked team of Ryan Keckley and Sheeva Parbhu 8-4.
The honor is the first for a Cavalier this season and the second of Devvarman’s career.
The eighth ranked Cavaliers hit the road for a pair of matches this week. On Friday, they visit No. 14 VCU, before heading south to face No. 35 Alabama on Sunday in Tuscaloosa.
