Cavalier Wrestlers Split at Ohio

Athens, OH – The Virginia wrestling team split a pair of matches in a triangle meet held at Ohio University. The Cavaliers handed Ashland a 38-3 loss and then dropped a close contest with Ohio by an 18-12 score. Virginia comes away from the meet with a 6-7 overall record.
The Cavaliers won seven of eight matches against Ashland and took two others by forfeit in their morning competition. Leading the way for UVa was Eric Albright, ranked 16th nationally, who recorded a technical fall against Ray Arnold with a 15-0 rout at 133 pounds. Damian Johnson also managed a technical fall thanks to a 17-0 win against Matt Snyder at 165 pounds.
Kellon Balum recorded a major decision at 141 pounds with his 14-4 win against Ashland’s Nic Albaugh. Drew DiPasquale (149), Tony Bradberry (157), Mike Grogan (174), Rocco Caponi (184) and Kyle Narkiewicz (197) all won decisions for the Cavaliers. Ross Gitomer at 125 and Scott Smith at heavyweight both won by forfeit in UVa’s most one-sided victory of the season.
In the afternoon matchup with Ohio, the two teams were even at 12-12 before the Bobcats managed wins in the final two matches to pull out the victory. Ohio improved to 15-6 following the win.
Virginia’s Ross Gitomer opened the match with a 6-5 victory at 125 pounds to give the Cavaliers the early lead while improving to 17-12 this season. Albright was then upset by Ohio’s Terry Jackson 9-5 at 133 after jumping out to an early 4-2 lead. The lost was just his fourth in 12 dual matches this season. Balum gave UVa the lead back with a 6-2 decision at 141 and then the Bobcats won decisions at 149, 157 and 165 to take a 12-6 lead. Mike Grogan’s 5-2 win at 174 ended the Bobcats momentum and then 19th-ranked Rocco Caponi took a 5-0 decision to even the match back up at 12-12.
Ohio’s Larry Reichard defeated UVa’s Kyle Narkiewicz 2-0 at 197 to give Ohio a 15-12 lead and the Bobcats heavyweight Marcus Adelman defeated Scott Smith 5-1 to ice the win for Ohio.
The Cavaliers return home next week to host NC State Friday at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gym and then wrestle Duke at 1 p.m. Saturday at home.
