CHARLOTTESVILLE – Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) went 4-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Virginia to an 11-0 win over George Washington Saturday in Cavaliers’ home opener at Davenport Field. Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) pitched six shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out five, to record his second win of the season.
Virginia improves to 3-1 on the season, while George Washington falls to 0-1.
“It’s always feels good to get the first home win of the year,” head coach Brian O’Connor said. “I thought we played well in some tough conditions today. A number of guys had big games offensively and on the mound, Sean took command from the start.”
In addition to Miclat, Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) and Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.) also shined offensively, each going 3-for-5 on the afternoon. Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Doolittle each went 2-for-3 for the Cavaliers, who tallied 18 hits in the game. Curtis Eward led George Washington, going 3-for-4 in the game.
The Cavalier pitching staff posted its first shutout of the young season. After Doolittle worked the first six, Robert Poutier (Yorktown, Va.) pitched two innings, allowing no hits. Jeff Lorick (Duluth, Ga.) pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the game.
Colonial starter Pat Lehman took the loss, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits in four innings of work.
Virginia took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Miclat singled to open the game and stole second before Marsh’s infield single moved him to third. Doolittle’s single through the vacated shortstop’s spot on a hit-and-run plated Miclat for the first run of the day. Marsh later scored on David Adams’ (Margate, Fla.) sacrifice fly.
The Cavaliers added a run in the second inning. Mitchell reached with a two-out single. After stealing second, he scored on Miclat’s RBI single.
Virginia scored three in the bottom of the third to make the score 6-0. Doolittle and Adams opened the innings with singles and both scored on Guyer’s double down the left field line. Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio) drove in Guyer with an RBI single to right.
The Cavalier lead was extended to 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) reached on a one-out walk and moved to second on a groundout. Mitchell singled to right to drive in Seabury. Miclat drove in Mitchell with his first of two triples of the day.
