Virginia Men Second After Day Two of ACC Championship Meet

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia men’s swimming and diving team is in second place after day two of the 2007 ACC Championship Meet at Koury Natatorium on the campus of North Carolina. The Cavaliers have 205.5 points over after the first two days of four-day meet, and trail Florida State (257) by 51.5 points.
The highlight of the day for Virginia was in the 200 I.M. Junior Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa.) broke his own school and conference record by winning the event in a time of 1:45.77. His time was also a NCAA `A-cut’ mark. Also in the 200 I.M., Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia), Pat Reams (North Easton, Mass.), and Tony Colella (Austin, Texas) swam in the finals, finishing sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively.
Virginia had three finalists in the 500 free. John Millen (Lilburn, Ga.) took fourth with a time of 4:21.53, Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J.) was seventh in a time of 4:24.93, and Darren Ankosko (East Brunswick, N.J.) was eighth in a time of 4:25.64. All three times were NCAA `B-cut’ times.
Also on Friday, the 50 free and 200 free relays too place. In addition, the points for the 1-meter diving were added into the standings.
The meet is being broadcast online by ACC Select. The finals of each day of competition will be aired. The meet will run through Saturday in Chapel Hill with preliminaries beginning each day at 11 a.m. and the finals at 7 p.m.
