CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior guard Sean Singletary (Philadelphia, Pa.) is a first-team selection to the 2007 All-Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball team and senior guard J.R. Reynolds (Roanoke, Va.) is a second-team selection. Singletary also earned first-team All-ACC honors last season and Reynolds was an All-ACC third-team selection in 2006.
Singletary is the first Virginia men’s basketball player to earn first-team All-ACC honors twice since Bryant Stith earned the accolade three consecutive seasons from 1990 to 1992.
Singletary leads the Cavaliers in scoring (544, 18.8 ppg.), assists (134, 4.6 apg.), steals (36, 1.24 spg.) and average minutes played a game (958, 33.0 mpg.). He ranks fourth in the ACC in scoring, second in free throw percentage (.884, 167-189), second in three-point field goals (75, 2.59 pg), sixth in assists, and 10th in minutes played.
Singletary has scored in double figures in 19 consecutive games and has tallied 20 or more points in a game 12 times this season. He was named the ACC Player of the Week in consecutive weeks on Jan. 2 and Jan. 8.
“Obviously I’m ecstatic about Sean being able to become first-team All-ACC for the second consecutive year,” said UVa head coach Dave Leitao. “It shows his commitment to get better every day and his ability to be able to perform consistently at such a high level.”
Reynolds received the most points in the voting of any of the five players on the second team. He is averaging 18.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists a game. Reynolds ranks sixth in the ACC in scoring (second in ACC play at 20.0 points a game) and fourth in free throw percentage (.823, 149-181). He was named the ACC Player of the Week on Jan. 22.
Reynolds has also scored in double figures in each of the last 19 games and has scored at least 20 points in 11 games this season. Reynolds scored a career-high 40 points in UVa’s win over Wake Forest on Jan. 21. He is currently 12th on Virginia’s all-time scoring list with 1,618 career points.
“It is unfortunate that six players couldn’t make first team because J.R. is deserving of that,” said Leitao. “Getting as close as he did speaks to that. Having J.R. rewarded is a credit to his hard work and the consistency he has shown this season.”
Also named to the All-ACC first team were Jared Dudley (Boston College), Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina), Al Thornton (Florida State), and Zabian Dowdell (Virginia Tech). Joining Reynolds on the All-ACC second team are D.J. Strawberry (Maryland), Tyrese Rice (Boston College), Josh McRoberts (Duke) and Brandan Wright (North Carolina). Named to the All-ACC third team are Kyle Visser (Wake Forest), Javaris Crittenton (Georgia Tech), Brandon Costner (NC State), Jamon Gordon (Virginia Tech), and Jack McClinton (Miami).
