Charlottesville, VA – Virginia football coach Al Groh today announced the hiring of Wayne Lineburg, a 1996 UVa graduate, as the Cavaliers new wide receivers coach. Lineburg replaces John Garrett who was recently named tight ends coach for the Dallas Cowboys.
“We are very pleased to have Wayne join our staff and make his return to the University,” Groh said. “As a Virginia graduate, he has a great love and passion for the University and he brings with him a firsthand knowledge of what it takes to successful here as a student-athlete. That’s an invaluable combination for us.
“Wayne has been fortunate to work under two of the finest area college coaches in Jimmye Laycock at William & Mary and Dave Clawson at Richmond and his father, Norman, is one of the legendary high school coaching figures in the state. He has been a regular instructor at our summer camps, so he has an already established chemistry with our current staff. His positions at both William & Mary and Richmond have allowed him to have supervisory responsibilities with very successful passing schemes at the Division I-AA level. Together, all of these factors make Wayne a great fit for Virginia Cavaliers football.”
Lineburg, 33, comes to UVa after spending three years at the University of Richmond where he served as offensive coordinator and running backs coach. In 2005 the Spiders gained a school-record 4,957 yards of total offense and scored 44 touchdowns. The offensive unit averaged 381.3 yards per game and ranked 41st in the country. Lineburg’s offense averaged more than 330 yards per game every year and had an 800-yard rusher each season.
He came to Richmond after serving as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator for four seasons (2000-03) on Jimmye Laycock’s staff at William & Mary.
“I am very excited to return to Virginia and to have the opportunity to work for Coach Groh,” Lineburg said. “It is a true honor and privilege to come back and work at my alma mater. I really look forward to getting out and recruiting because, to me, Virginia is the perfect place in terms of an outstanding combination for both academics and athletics.
“I want to thank coach Clawson and the entire staff at Richmond for everything they have done for me. He has really helped me develop as a coach and he was a tremendous person to work for.
“Coach Groh has assembled a great group of coaches that I feel fortunate to be a part of. I played with Mike Groh and Anthony Poindexter and Mike London recruited me when he was working at William & Mary. Bob Price was a coach I worked closely with when I was a graduate assistant at Virginia. They are a bunch of very bright, hard-working people. I’m looking forward to working with all of them.”
A native of Radford, Va., Lineburg graduated from UVa in 1996 with a degree in government. A quarterback who lettered in 1995, he was played on three bowl teams and was a member of the 1995 ACC championship team. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at UVa on George Welsh’s staff from 1998-99.
His father, Norman, was the long-time football coach at Radford High School and is a member of the Virginia High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Lineburg played for his father at Radford HS where he earned all-district honors as a quarterback.
