CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 49 Virginia Women’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss to No. 10 North Carolina in its ACC Opener Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Virginia falls to 6-4 (0-1 ACC) with the loss, while the Tar Heels improve to 12-5 (2-1 ACC).

North Carolina took the early 1-0 advantage by sweeping the doubles contests. No. 21 Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand topped Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Lara Alexander (London, England) 8-3 at the No. 1 position. At No. 2 doubles, No. 29 Sara Anundsen and Katrina Tsang defeated Brintney Larson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) 8-1. Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) fell 8-7 to Jenna Long and Austin Smith at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, North Carolina extended its lead 3-0 as Tsang topped Larson 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 and Long defeated Stevens 0-6, 7-6, 6-0 at No. 1. Virginia cut the lead to 3-1 as Yahner defeated Anundsen 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 3 position. Smith’s 7-6, 7-5 win over Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) clinched the match for North Carolina. The match ended with Collins downing Hammond 6-7, 6-4, 10-4 at No. 5 singles and Marand defeating Rales 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday as they visit Duke.
