Virginia Women's Tennis Falls at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 49 Virginia Women’s tennis team suffered its second loss to open conference play, falling 6-1 at No. 21 Duke Saturday afternoon at the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 6-5 (0-2 ACC) on the season, while the Blue Devils improve to 5-2 (2-0 ACC).
Virginia got a win at No. 3 doubles, as Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) and Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) topped Tory Zawacki and Kristin Cargill 8-3. However, the Blue Devils scored wins at the No. 1 and No.2 positions to take the opening point.
Duke won the first five singles matches completed to extended its lead to 6-0. In the final match on the courts, Rales defeated Clelia Deltour 7-6, 7-5 at the No. 6 position for the Cavaliers’ lone singles win of the day.
The Cavaliers return to action on Thursday when they host Virginia Tech in their ACC home opener. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center. The match is worth one point in the Commonwealth Challenge presented by Comcast. Virginia leads the all sports competition between the schools by a score of 10.5-5.5. The match will also be broadcast online by ACC Select.
