Men's Lacrosse Defeats Mount St. Mary's 23-6

Charlottesville, Va. – The Virginia men’s lacrosse team scored the game’s first eight goals to take control early in a 23-6 win over Mount St. Mary’s tonight before 1142 fans at Klöckner Stadium.
With the win the Cavaliers remain undefeated in night games at Klöckner (19-0) and improve to 5-1 overall this season. The Mount, playing its first road game of the year, remains winless at 0-3.
Virginia struck first on the first of Drew Thompson’s two goals with just over three minutes elapsed. Ben Rubeor notched his first goal of the evening at the 9:35 mark and Foster Gilbert followed with his third goal of the season as the Cavalier lead grew to 3-0 after eight minutes of play.
Thompson’s extra-man goal with less than four minutes to play in the opening quarter pushed the Cavalier lead to 4-0. Danny Glading, Rubeor and Steve Giannone scored in the final 90 seconds of the quarter as the lead grew to 7-0.
Following a Glading goal to open the second quarter, Dave Orban scored to end Mount St. Mary’s drought at the 10:53 mark. Orban scored three times to become only the fourth player to record a hat trick against Virginia this season.
Virginia came back with a four-goal run, highlighted by two goals by Gavin Gill, to run the lead to double digits late in the first half. The Mount’s Joe Bello scored five seconds before the break as the Cavaliers took a 12-2 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Head coach Dom Starsia substituted frequently throughout the second half. Bud Petit replaced Kip Turner in goal to start the second half. Petit played the third quarter and finished with one save, while allowing two goals.
Virginia opened the third quarter with six goals in the first five minutes to take an 18-2 lead. The reserves built the lead to 22-4 early in the fourth quarter. Overall, Starsia used all 36 available players in the game.
Virginia returns to action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Towson at Klöckner Stadium.
