MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Virginia men’s swimming and diving team completed the second day of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Cavaliers have 39.5 points at the meet and stand in 18th place.
For the second consecutive day, Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa.) highlighted the day for the Cavaliers. A day after he broke his own 200 I.M. school record while finishing seventh in that event, he set a new school and ACC record in the 400 I.M. as he finished third. His time of 3:44.61 in the morning was the fastest in the preliminaries and broke the previous school and ACC record of Bo Greenwood (3:44.99 in 2002). In the evening, Mellors shattered the record he set earlier in day by swimming a 3:42.03 in the finals for a third place finish.
Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia) also earned All-American honors on Friday. He finished in a tie for 11th place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 53.73 in the finals.
In the 200 free, John Millen (Lilburn, Ga.) took 34th place with a time of 1:38.27.
The day concluded with the 800 free relay, which the Cavaliers took 14th place. The team of Mellors, Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J.), Millen, and Rich Hutton (Leicestershire, U.K.) swam a time of 6:30.06.
The meet concludes Saturday on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
