Cavaliers Win Titles at 49ers Invitational

Virginia’s Meghan Briggs won the javelin competition in her first-ever collegiate meet, throwing a 136′ 10″ (41.70m). The first-year from Palmyra, Pa. joined her coach Carrie Lane in the winners’ circle as Lane won the hammer the day before, throwing 164′ 1″ and just edging her student-athlete Amy Bilmanis, who took third and was second among collegiate competitors.
Alexa Manning finished in the top-six both the hammer and the shot put, taking third in the shot with a 45′ 5″ (13.84) and sixth in the hammer (141′ 5″). Eric Pickle also finished sixth, putting the shot 50′ 10″ (15.49m). Virginia’s vertical jumpers fared well as Jeff McClurg and David Lewis both vaulted 15’1″ with McClurg edging Lewis for fourth on misses, while Aaron Klansek took third in the high jump with his 6′ 2.75″.
The middle distance and distance corps took home a number of honors as the women’s 3K finished 2-4-5-8 as Janine Ricci led the way with a 9:52.10. Lauretta Dezubay just edged Katie Read 10:03.11 to 10:04.04, and Stephanie Garcia ran a 10:08.45. Sam Fletcher took second for the men with his 8:38.18, just ahead of James Erickson, who took fourth in 8:38.97. In the 1500m, Kevin Tschirhart took third with his 3:55.57 while Susan Brooks finished sixth with her 4:40.17. Ariane Sloan was fifth in the 800 after winning her heat, running a 2:18.27.
