Virginia Rallies to Beat Charlotte, 74-72, at the Buzzer; Hosts South Florida in WNIT Third Round on Thursday at JPJA

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – With just four seconds on the clock, sophomore Lyndra Littles (Washington, D.C.) received an inbounds pass and converted a pull-up jumper to give the Virginia women’s basketball team a 74-72 win over Charlotte in the Women’s NIT Second Round on Monday at John Paul Jones Arena.

The Cavaliers improved to 18-14 overall, while the 49ers concluded their season at 19-13.

Virginia now hosts South Florida in WNIT Third Round action on Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m. at JPJA. South Florida beat Coppin State, 66-49 in second round action on Monday to advance.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for youth (aged 18 and younger), students of participating institutions, and senior citizens. Tickets will also be available on game day beginning 90 minutes prior to tip-off at the John Paul Jones Arena ticket windows located adjacent to the west (main) entrance.

Virginia opened the game with five straight points before the 49ers scored a bucket. The teams were tied eight times, before Charlotte went ahead by four, 39-35 at halftime.

The 49ers opened the second half with four points to go ahead by eight, 43-35. UVa called a timeout and regrouped. The Cavaliers then went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 47-47. The teams battled within a one-point margin over a three-minute span before UVa went ahead by four, 59-55 on lay-up by senior Siedah Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) and a three-pointer from senior Brenna McGuire (Winchester, Mass.). Charlotte came back, retaking the lead by four, 72-68 with 1:37 to go. Littles made two lay-ups and the game-winning jumper for the two-point win. Charlotte’s three-point attempt as time expired never reach the rim.

Freshman Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) paced UVa with 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double. Littles followed with 16 points, while Williams and McGuire added 11 points each. Junior Sharneé Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) dished out a game-high 10 assists, marking the sixth time this season (10th in her career) that she’s netted double-digit assists.

Traci Ray led Charlotte with 19 points, including five three-point buckets. Sabrina Gregory followed with 14 points, while Danielle Burgin rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11 points.

Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Charlotte, 38-35.
