CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 29 Virginia Women’s tennis team was defeated by No. 33 Purdue 4-3 in its home opener Saturday afternoon at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 6-3, while Purdue improves to 6-2.

Purdue opened the match by taking the doubles point, which proved to be critical. The Cavaliers got a win at No. 3 doubles, as Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) topped Randi Schuler and Anna Dzeva 8-4. However, the Boilermakers got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the opening point.

In singles, the two teams split the six singles matches, giving Purdue the 4-3 dual match win. The Cavaliers got a win at No. 2 singles, where Brintney Larson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) downed Schuler 6-4, 6-3. Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) defeated Cigdem Duru 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 5 position. At No. 6 singles, Rales topped Dzeva 7-6, 6-2.

“Give Purdue a lot of credit, it was a well-earned and well-deserved victory for them,” said head coach Mark Guilbeau. “As tough as it is to be on the short end of a match like this, it helps to know that Purdue did the things needed to win this match than we did things to lose it. I was proud of our team’s effort today.”

Virginia will open ACC play next weekend as it visits North Carolina and Duke.
