TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 49 Virginia women’s tennis team suffered its second consecutive loss to a top 20 opponent, falling 4-3 to No. 18 Florida State Friday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 8-7 on the season, 2-4 in the ACC. The Seminoles improve to 10-5 (3-3 ACC).

Florida State took the 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping the three doubles matches. That point proved crucial, as the teams split the six singles matches to give the Seminoles the 4-3 win. After Ania Rynarzewska topped Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) at No. 3 singles, Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) cut the FSU lead to 2-1 with her 6-2, 6-1 victory over Tapiwa Marobela at the No. 5 position. Carolin Walter downed Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) at No. 4 singles amd Lauren Macfarlane defeated Brintney Larson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) at No. 2 singles to clinch victory for Florida State. Virginia won the final two matches on the courts to cut the final margin to 4-3. At No. 1 singles, Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) topped No. 76 Nicola Slater 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) closed out the match with her 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over Jessica Wente at No. 6 singles.
