CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team closes out its 10-game homestand by hosting in-state foe Liberty in a doubleheader at The Park on Wednesday afternoon (April 11). The first game of the twinbill is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
The Cavaliers currently stand at 14-27 overall and 1-11 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. UVa dropped all three games in its series against Virginia Tech last weekend at The Park.
Liberty is an impressive 24-16 on the season and 2-1 in the Big South. The Flames took two of three games from Wintrop over the weekend and have won nine of their last 11 contests.
Virginia leads the all-time series vs. Liberty 33-15 dating back to the 1980 season. Last season in Lynchburg, UVa lost the first game to the Flames 5-2, but bounced back with a 13-3 (5 innings) win in the nightcap. The Cavaliers swept doubleheaders from Liberty in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 seasons.
“Liberty has an extremely talented senior class and they will be a very tough team for us to face,” said head coach Karen Johns.
First-year Kelly Haller (Leesburg, Va.) leads the Cavaliers with a .430 (46-107) batting average. She also tops the team in home runs (10), RBI (38), walks (20), slugging percentage (.776) and on-base percentage (519). She is tied with fourth-year Brooke Sorber (Alexandria, Va.) for team-high honors in doubles with seven. Sorber is hitting .315 (23-73) on the season.
