CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team clinched at least a share of the 2007 ACC regular season title with a 6-1 victory over No. 16 Duke Friday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. A crowd of 613, the second largest in facility history, watched the Cavaliers become the first ACC team to win 10 conference matches in a season.

The Cavaliers (22-3, 10-0 ACC) will have the opportunity to finish undefeated in conference play for the second time in the past three seasons when they host North Carolina in the regular season finale on Sunday. This season marks the fourth consecutive year that Virginia has won at least a share of the ACC regular season title.

“We want to thank the students and the community for coming out and creating a great atmosphere today,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland, “The crowd gave us a lot of energy in doubles and we were able to take that momentum into singles. I was pleased with our overall performance today and look forward to a great match against a tough North Carolina team on Sunday.”

The Cavaliers took the early 1-0 advantage by sweeping the three doubles contests. The No. 47 team of Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) topped Ned Samuelson and Dylan Arnould 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. The win improved the team to 19-5 on the year, and 8-1 in the ACC. The team of Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) clinched the opening point for UVa with their 9-7 victory over Peter Rodrigues and Kiril Dimitrov at No. 3 doubles. The sweep was completed as No. 2 Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) won a top five battle at No. 1 doubles, defeating No. 5 Joey Atas and David Goulet 9-8 (2). Devvarman and Huey are now 26-6 on the season and 9-1 in the ACC.

In singles, the Cavaliers quickly made the score 2-0 as Barrick downed Arnould at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, No. 22 Huey defeated No. 69 Atas 6-4, 7-6, to improve to 29-6 on the season and 9-1 in the ACC. Singer clinched the win for Virginia with his 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex Stone at the No. 6 position. Duke got their lone point of the afternoon as Rodrigues topped Inglot 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. At No. 1 singles, Devvarman made history with his 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Dimitrov. The win was Devvarman’s 100th career singles win, making him the fourth Cavalier in history to reach the mark. Of those four players, Devavrman becomes the first to reach the mark in his junior season. Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) ended the match with his 6-4, 7-6 (1), win over Goulet at No. 4 singles.

Friday’s crowd was the largest for a regular season match at the Snyder Tennis Center. The facility record was set in 2005 when 627 fans attended Virginia’s second round NCAA Tournament win over Texas A&M Corpus-Christi.

Virginia will close out the 2007 regular season on Sunday when its hosts No. 5 North Carolina (21-1, 9-1 ACC) at 1 p.m. The match is part of a tennis doubleheader with the Cavalier women hosting Georgia Tech at 11 a.m. The matches are scheduled for the Snyder Tennis Center, but could be moved indoors to the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Snyder Tennis Center if there is inclement weather.
