CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 46 Virginia women’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 5 Clemson Saturday afternoon at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 10-9 overall, and 4-6 in the ACC. The Tigers improve to 18-3 (9-1 ACC).

In doubles, Clemson won at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, both by 8-6 scores. The Cavaliers posted the win at No. 2 doubles, as the team of Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Kristen McVitty (Woodland Hills, Calif.) topped No. 41 Ina Hadziselimovic and Estefania Balda 9-7.

In singles, the Cavaliers got wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) improved her ACC record to 8-2 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Maria Brito at No. 5 singles. At No. 6 singles, Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) made history with her 6-2, 6-4 win over Hadziselimovic. It was her 28th singles victory of the season, which ties the school record for singles wins by a senior. The senior wins record was set by Jennifer Tuchband in 2003.

Virginia will close out the regular season on Sunday when it hosts No. 4 Georgia Tech. Due to the weather, the match will be played indoor at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at 11 a.m. The match is the start of a Cavalier tennis doubleheader, with the Cavalier men’s team taking on North Carolina at 1 p.m.
