Cavalier Women's Tennis Defeated by No. 4 Georgia Tech 5-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE – For the second consecutive day, the No. 46 Virginia women’s tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to a top five team, falling to No. 4 Georgia Tech Sunday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. With the loss, Virginia ends the regular season with a 10-10 overall record and a 4-7 ACC mark. The Yellow Jackets improve to 20-4 (10-1 ACC).
The teams opened the match with singles play due to the doubleheader with the men’s team. Georgia Tech won at the top four positions, to secure the team victory. The Cavaliers recorded wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, as Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) and Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) each defeated ranked opponents. At No. 5, Rales rallied from losing the first set to top No. 46 Christy Striplin 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. With the win, Rales improves to 9-2 in ACC play this season. On senior day, the lone senior on the team, Hammond, scored a straight set win over No. 103 Tarryn Rudman, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 6 position. It was her 29th singles win of the season, giving her sole possession of the school record for singles wins by a senior.
In doubles, the Cavaliers got a win at the No. 3 position. Rales and Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) defeated Rudman and Kirsten Flower 9-7. The Yellow Jackets won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take the doubles point.
Virginia will return to action on Thursday when the ACC Tournament begins at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C. The tournament seedings and match times will be announced later.
