Men's Tennis Completes Undefeated ACC Campaign With 6-1 Win Over No. 5 North Carolina

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team became the first team in ACC history to go through the conference regular season with an 11-0 record, as it concluded the regular season with a 6-1 victory over No. 5 North Carolina Sunday afternoon at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. A season high crowd of 793 was in attendance to see the Cavaliers improve to 23-3 (11-0 ACC) on the year.

With the victory over the Tar Heels (21-2, 9-2 ACC), the Cavaliers won the ACC regular season crown outright. It marks the fourth consecutive year Virginia has won the ACC regular season, as the Cavaliers won it outright in 2005, shared it with North Carolina in 2004 and shared it with Duke and Miami in 2006.

“To go undefeated through the ACC is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland, “This is the toughest league in the nation. There is so much depth from top to bottom; you can’t relax against anyone. To close out the undefeated season with wins against Duke and North Carolina, two of the top teams in the league, gives us a lot of momentum heading into the ACC Tournament next week.”

The Cavaliers took the early 1-0 advantage by sweeping the three doubles contests. The No. 47 team of Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) topped Stefan Hardy and Sebastian Guejman 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. The win improved the team to 20-5 on the year, and 9-1 in the ACC. At No. 1 doubles, the No. 2 ranked team of Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) erased an early 4-1 deficit to top No. 48 Lenny Gullan and David Stone 8-6 to clinch the doubles point for UVa. Devvarman and Huey end the ACC campaign with a 10-1 record in the conference at the No. 1 position and are 27-6 overall. Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) completed the weep with their 8-6 victory over Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, the teams battled early on with each team winning three first sets. The first match completed extended the Cavalier lead to 2-0 as Devvarman made short work of No. 63 Benjamin Carlotti, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. For Devvarman, he ended finished ACC play with a 10-1 mark, and improved to 31-4 overall. Barrick made the score 3-0 as he completed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Fogleman at No. 5 singles. Barrick was 9-2 in the ACC during his freshman season. North Carolina scored their lone point of the afternoon as Hardy defeated Inglot 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 position to cut the UVa advantage to 3-1. Huey clinched the dual match win for Virginia as he rallied from losing the first set to down Kearney 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. It was Huey’s 30th singles win of the season as he improved to 30-6 and 10-1 in the ACC. With the dual match clinched Guejman retired in his match against Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) at No. 4 singles, with Miklo leading 7-6 (5), 2-3. In the final match on the courts, Singer rallied from losing the first set to down Will Plyler 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

The win was Virginia’s 11th victory this season against a team currently ranked in the ITA top 20. The Cavalier victory also extended a pair of winning streaks. Virginia has now won 13 consecutive matches against ACC opponents and 15 consecutive home matches.

Virginia will be the top seed at next week’s ACC Tournament, held at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C. The Cavaliers will have a first round bye and open play on Friday. Virginia is looking to capture its third ACC Tournament title in the past four seasons.
