REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The No. 13 Virginia women’s rowing team completed a clean sweep during the final day of action at the Windermere Real Estate Classic on Sunday at Redwood Shores.
The Cavaliers won all three events against No. 14 Washington State, giving the `Hoos a perfect record for the weekend. Of the 10 schools competing, Virginia was recognized by the Classic as the only school to win every race it competed in.
“We went 11-0 for the weekend,” UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. “We were the only crew to do that. I’m very, very pleased with the effort our team produced.”
In the varsity eight, manned by Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Jennifer Cromwell, Melanie Kok, Libby McCann, Emelia Colman-Shepherd, Lauren Hutchins, Kelsie Chaudoin, Sara Lippa, and Anna Samaha, UVa finished seven seconds ahead of WSU in 6:44.92.
In the second varsity eight, the Cavaliers picked up a 10-second victory, winning in 6:49.36. UVa’s boat included Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Renee Albers, Katrin Sydlik, Bridget Fowler, Heather Gardner, Andria Haneman, Yvonne Epp, Desiree Burns, and Augusta Stratos.
In the varsity four event, the `Hoos won in 7:55.72 with Mary Eddy (coxswain), Mindy Fiesler, Rebecca Ryall, Amanda Chase, and Diane Leigh.
“We’re very excited about the depth of our team,” said UVa assistant coach Steve Pritzker, who handles the varsity four. “We’ve made a lot of progress, but we still have a way to go.”
Virginia’s novice eight, consisting of Caitlin Wilmot (coxswain), Alexandra Clair, Marie Long, Caitlin Clark, Nancy Graves, Hannah Jordan, Helen Tompkins, Frosty Baylor, and Shalane Carlson, went 2-0 on the weekend. In addition to Saturday’s win over California, the `Hoos claimed a win over Washington on Friday evening.
Seven-time defending champion Virginia travels to Clemson, S.C., on Saturday, April 21 for the 2007 ACC Championships.
