CHARLOTTESVILLE – Wearing jersey No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson, Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va.) went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases to lead the sixth-ranked Virginia baseball team to a 12-5 win against Richmond Tuesday night at Davenport Field.
Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases to set the single-season Virgina stolen bases record, while John Scaglione (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), David Adams (Margate, Fla.) and Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) each had two hits as part of the Cavaliers’ 16-hit attack. Guyer extended his career-best hitting streak to 25 games, the longest current hit streak in the ACC.
Virginia stole a season-high eight bases, led by Mitchell’s three and Miclat’s two.
Richmond (22-15) took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly by Vince Riggi.
Virginia (32-8) knotted the score in the second inning on an RBI double by Scaglione which scored Guyer.
In the third inning, Virginia grabbed the lead for good with runs on a Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) fielder’s choice and a Guyer RBI double.
Miclat hit an RBI single in the fourth, then was part of a double steal with Mitchell. The stolen base was Miclat’s second of the game and 27th of the season, breaking the single-season record set by David Stone in 2002.
Richmond shaved a run off the lead in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Evan Stehle, his first of the season. It marked the first opponent home run in Davenport Field since March 13 against Niagara, a span of nine games.
The Spiders added two runs in the sixth inning, doing all of their damage with two outs. Alex Wotring, Andrew Justice and Matt McKenna hit consecutive singles to bring in the first run and put runners at first and third. In the ensuing at-bat, McKenna was caught in a rundown between first and second, but Justice slid home before McKenna was tagged out, which allowed Richmond to cut the lead to 5-4.
Virginia came back with two of its own in the bottom of the sixth. Miclat walked to lead off and scored when Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) doubled to the left-field corner. Doolittle then reached on an error by the third baseman. After a double steal, Adams hit a sacrifice fly to push the lead back to three, 7-4.
The Cavaliers added three more in the seventh. Miclat singled in a run, with Mitchell also scoring on a bobble by the center fielder. Doolittle followed with a single up the middle to bring Miclat home.
Richmond scored a run in the eighth on a McKenna single, but Virginia answered with two more runs in its half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Tim Henry (Fairfield, Conn.) and a single by Mitchell.
The Cavaliers travel to No. 13 Clemson this weekend for a key ACC series.
