CARY, N.C – The Virginia women’s tennis team had its run at the 2007 ACC Tennis Tournament come to an end with a 4-0 quarterfinal loss to top seeded Clemson Friday morning at the Cary Tennis Center. Virginia falls to 11-11 overall with the loss and will now await the NCAA Tournament Selection announcement.

“I am really proud of the team, especially at the top of the lineup,” head coach Mark Guilbeau said. “Unfortunately the team match score was not indicative of how close the match was. Brintney was going to win, which would have been a big win for her. Kristen was up in the second set and Jenny was battling with one of the top players in the country. We just need to find a way to be just five percent better because that is the difference between winning and losing right now.”

The Tigers (20-3) opened the match by taking the doubles point. NC State won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead.

In singles, the Tigers won the first set in all six matches, four of them in tiebreakers. Clemson took advantage of those first sets with wins at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles to clinch the match. In the matches that were abandoned, Brintney Larson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led Estefania Balda 6-7, 6-1, 4-1 at No. 3 singles. Kristen McVitty (Woodland Hills, Calif.) was leading in the second set against Carol Salge after losing the first in the tiebreaker. Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) was serving to force a second set tiebreaker against Ani Mijacika, after losing the first set in a tiebreaker.

Virginia will now await a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 64-team bracket will be announced on May 2.
