No. 5 Virginia Claims Eighth Consecutive ACC Championship

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 5 Virginia women’s rowing team captured its eighth consecutive ACC Championship on Saturday at Clemson’s Lake Hartwell.
The Cavaliers won all four scoring events. The `Hoos won the team title with 60 points, followed by Clemson in second with 46 points. Duke was third with 43 points, followed by Miami with 25, Boston College with 23, and North Carolina with 13.
Following the races, Virginia’s varsity eight, manned by Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Jennifer Cromwell, Melanie Kok, Libby McCann, Emelia Colman-Shepherd, Lauren Hutchins, Kelsie Chaudoin, Sara Lippa, and Anna Samaha, earned ACC Crew of the Year honors.
Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer was named ACC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career. In the first-ever vote for Freshman of the Year, Cavalier Jennifer Cromwell of the varsity eight was awarded the honor.
Five Cavaliers were named to the 14-member All-ACC team: coxswain Caitlin Mixter, Melanie Kok, Sara Lippa, Libby McCann, and Anna Samaha.
“I’m really pleased with the overall effort of the whole team,” Sauer said. “They did a fantastic job today. I’m really happy with what our team did.”
In the final race of the morning- the varsity eight- Virginia took the lead for good by the 500-meter mark and never looked back, winning with a time of 6:28.1. Duke outlasted Clemson in an incredible sprint to the finish between the two schools. The Blue Devils clocked in at 6:33.5, while the Tigers had a time of 6:33.8. Miami placed fourth (6:40.2), while Boston College took home fifth (6:41.7). North Carolina was sixth (6:55.4).
In the second varsity eight, Virginia won with a time of 6:36.7. UVa’s boat included Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Renee Albers, Katrin Sydlik, Bridget Fowler, Heather Gardner, Andria Haneman, Yvonne Epp, Desiree Burns, and Augusta Stratos. Clemson earned its third runner-up finish of the day with a time of 6:48.9. Duke placed third in 6:51.2, while Boston College finished fourth at 6:55.5. The Hurricanes were fifth (6:55.6), followed by North Carolina (7:14.7).
Consisting of Caitlin Wilmot (coxswain), Alexandra Clair, Marie Long, Caitlin Clark, Nancy Graves, Hannah Jordan, Helen Tompkins, Frosty Baylor, and Shalane Carlson, Virginia’s novice eight took first in a time of 6:47.4. Clemson crossed the line in second place with a time of 7:06.3. North Carolina came through with its best finish of the day, posting a time of 7:10.6 in a third-place effort. Duke was fourth at 7:22.5, while Boston College (7:25.6) and Miami (8:06.8) rounded out the field.
In the varsity four, Virginia, manned by with Mary Eddy (coxswain), Mindy Fiesler, Rebecca Ryall, Amanda Chase, and Diane Leigh, placed first in a time of 7:31.6, with Clemson second at 7:48.4. Duke came in third with a time of 7:58.6, while Miami was fourth in 8:00.9. Boston College (8:10.3) and North Carolina (8:10.9) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in a tight finish.
In the non-scoring second varsity four race, Virginia “A” won in 7:42.6, followed by Virginia “B” in 7:34.8. Clemson was third (8:07.1), while North Carolina was fourth (8:47.9).
Fifth-ranked Virginia travels to Princeton, N.J., on Saturday, April 28 to race against host and No. 7 Princeton, No. 6 Notre Dame, and George Washington.
