Virginia Softball Shut Out By Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s Terese Gober limited the Cavaliers to one hit to lead the Seminoles to an 8-0 five-inning win over the Virginia softball team Sunday (April 22) at JoAnne Graf Field. With the loss, UVa falls to 15-34 overall and 1-17 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida State, which has won its last eight games, improves to 36-19 overall and 11-6 in the ACC.
Florida State scored in the first inning for the third time in the series as it plated three runs in the opening frame. Veronica Wootson reached on an error to lead off the inning and stole second base. She moved to third on Monica Montez’s single to center field. Wootson was thrown out at the plate on Carly Wynn’s squeeze bunt with Montez moving to second base. Yuruby Alicart drove in Montez and Wynn with a double off the wall in center field. Alicart eventually scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0. The Seminoles added an unearned run in the second inning. With two outs, Michelle Snyder reached on an infield error and scored on Montez’s single through the left side of the infield.
Florida State increased its lead to 6-0 with two more runs in the third inning. With one out, Jessica Gilmore reached on UVa’s third error of the game and moved to third on Brittany Osmon’s double to right center. Both runners scored on Brittany Krbec’s single through the left side of the infield. The Seminoles ended the game by scoring two runs in the fifth inning. Osmon hit a one-out double to right center and scored on Krbec’s single up the middle. LaShaun Davis moved Krbec to second with a single to center field. Snyder ended the game with a double to right center to score Krbec with FSU’s eighth run to make the final score 8-0.
First-year right fielder Sarah Tacke (Merced, Calif.) registered UVa’s only hit in the game with a double to center field in the second inning. Third-year left fielder Lindsey Preuss (La Plata, Md.) was the only other Cavalier to reach base as she drew a walk in the fifth inning.
Gober improves to 10-4 on the season with the one-hit shutout. She struck out four and walked one in the five-inning complete-game effort.
Fourth-year Coty Tolar (Marietta, Ga.) suffered the loss in the circle for Virginia. Tolar (5-11) allowed seven runs (four earned) on eight hits with one strikeout. Third-year Whitney Holstun (Escondido, Calif.) relieved Tolar in the fourth inning and allowed one run on three hits without retiring a batter.
Virginia returns to action on Wednesday (April 25) when it hosts George Mason in a doubleheader at The Park. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
