No. 3 Virginia Baseball Erupts for 14-0 Win over Maryland

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Behind a four-hit shutout from Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) and four hits each from Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio), the No. 3 Virginia baseball team rolled to a 14-0 win Friday night over Maryland in front of 2,197 at Davenport Field.
Thompson (10-0) dominated throughout, allowing just four batters to reach base, but none got past first base. He also struck out six. He has not allowed an earned run at home in 27 2/3 innings, dating back to March 23 against Miami. It also marked his second shutout of the season and the third of his career.
Kevin Biringer (3-9) took the loss for Maryland (23-22, 7-15 ACC) after surrendering four hits and three runs in starting for the Terrapins. Ian Schwalenberg gave up 10 earned runs and eight hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Virginia (35-10, 14-7) racked up 17 hits, led by Farrell and Marsh with four each. Marsh also drove in a career-best six runs. Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) and David Adams (Margate, Fla.) each had two hits.
Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) opened the scoring with a solo home run over the bleachers in left-center field in the second inning. It marked his second home run of the season.
The Cavaliers tacked on two in the third on a Marsh single before scoring four in the fourth. Adams tripled to lead off and came home on the play when shortstop Dan Melvin muffed the relay throw. Three batters later, Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) doubled to right-center to score a run and Marsh hit the next pitch for a double to score two more and give the Cavaliers a 7-0 lead.
Virginia added six in the fifth inning. Farrell had a run-scoring single before Marsh added a two-run double and Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) ripped a two-run single.
The Hoos added a run in the seventh inning on a solo home run by Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.), his third blast of the year.
The teams play game two of the series at 7 p.m. Saturday.
