CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season, downing No. 31 Old Dominion 4-0 in a second round match Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The victory improved the Cavaliers’ record to 28-3 on the season, as the team set a new record for wins in a season.
“I was pleased with the intensity and focus we played with today,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland, “Old Dominion is a great team and they gave us a battle when we played them in the regular season. We knew we were going to have to come out and play quality tennis to win today. From the top of the lineup to the bottom, we got great performances.”
Virginia, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, took a 1-0 advantage in the match by winning the doubles point. Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Dominic Inglot (London, England) needed less than half an hour to get Virginia started with an 8-1 win over Eidy Igarashi and Aleksandr Seleznev at No. 2 doubles. Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) clinched the opening point as they defeated Yakov Diskin and Rodrigo Souza 8-4 at the No. 3 position.
In singles, Barrick made the score 2-0 as he topped Souza 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 position. Angelinos made it 3-0 minutes later as he completed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Diskin at No. 6 singles. With rain approaching, the Cavaliers needed one more point to wrap up their fourth straight trip to the round of 16. Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) provided that point minutes before the inclement weather reached Charlottesville, capping a 7-6, 6-1 win over Harel Srugo at No. 1 singles. It was Devvarman’s 36th singles win of the season, a total that ranks third in school history for a season, and the most by a third-year.
“This is as good as I have felt heading into a round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament,” Boland said. “I have so much confidence in this team and what they can accomplish. I can’t wait to get down to Athens and play again.”
The win was the Cavaliers’ 14th consecutive win, the second-longest streak in school history. Virginia also ran its home court win streak to 17 matches. This season also marked the first time that the Cavaliers reached the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament with shutout wins in each of the first two rounds of the tournament.
Virginia will play the winner of the Winston-Salem Regional in the round of 16 on Thursday, May 17 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia. In the second round in Winston-Salem, ACC rivals Wake Forest and Clemson were meeting for a trip to Athens.
