JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The third-seeded Virginia baseball team dropped a 5-0 contest to No. 2-seed North Carolina Saturday afternoon at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Cavaliers, shutout for the first time this season, are eliminated from the tournament, while the Tar Heels will compete in the championship game Sunday.
Casey Lambert (Harrisonburg, Va.), making his third career start, had just one rough inning, but overall was spectacular. Lambert (2-2) allowed just two earned runs, four hits and a walk while striking out four in the second-longest outing of his career.
North Carolina’s Alex White (6-4) matched Lambert throughout and threw seven innings, allowing just two hits and four walks while striking out five. Andrew Carignan pitched the final two innings for his 12th save.
John Scaglione (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) had two hits for the Cavaliers (43-14). Tim Henry (Fairfield, Conn.) had Virginia’s third hit, which came after a 16-pitch at-bat against Carignan in the eighth inning. David Adams (Margate, Fla.) added a single in the ninth.
The Tar Heels (47-12) scored twice in the sixth inning. The first two runners reached, and Reid Fronk then hit a bloop single to center to score Seth Williams. Garrett Gore followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Kyle Shelton.
North Carolina added three runs in the eighth inning without hitting a ball out of the infield. Fronk hit an RBI bunt single, Dustin Ackley hit a run-scoring infield single and Tim Federowicz hit an RBI groundout.
The Cavaliers will now await their status for the NCAA tournament. Regional sites will be announced Sunday, and the full 64-team field will be unveiled Monday.
