Virginia Tops Lafayette 5-1 in First Game of Charlottesville Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Brandon Guyer’s three-run home run highlighted a four-run first inning for the Virginia Cavaliers that helped propel them to a 5-1 victory over Lafayette in the first game of the Charlottesville Regional at Davenport Field.

Sean Doolittle allowed one run on nine hits while striking out six in 7.2 innings of work to pick up the win, improving to 8-3 on the season. The win was Doolittle’s 22nd career victory, setting a new Virginia record. Jake Rule allowed two hits while pitching 1.1 innings of shutout relief. Matt Kamine took the loss for the Leopards, allowing five runs on 11 hits over eight innings to fall to 7-5 on the season.

Brandon Marsh led Virginia offensively with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, while Beau Seabury went 3-for-4. James Conrad led Lafayette by going 3-for-4 in the game.

The Cavaliers (44-14) jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. Marsh hit a one-out single and Doolittle followed with a walk. Guyer gave Virginia the lead with his three-run home run to left-center. It was Guyer’s team-leading eighth homer of the season. Later in the inning, David Adams walked and scored on Seabury’s two-out double off the top of the left-center field wall.

Virginia added a run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 5-0. Tyler Cannon reached with a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on a balk. He scored on Marsh’s RBI single to right-center.

Lafayette (33-19) got on the board with one run in the top of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Tom Ambrosole led off the inning with a double to left. Matt Hall pinch-ran for Ambrosole and came around to score on Conrad’s single to right.

The Charlottesville Regional will continue Saturday with a pair of games. The Cavaliers will meet the winner of the Rutgers-Oregon State game at 6 p.m., while Lafayette will meet the Rutgers-Oregon State game loser at 1 p.m.

Fans planning on attending Saturday’s games are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance by ordering online at VirginiaSports.com. Single-game reserved tickets are $12, while general admission seats are $8. All seating in the grandstand is reserved. General admission seating is on the left field hillside and in the bleachers beyond the left field fence. Fans are also advised to arrive early to avoid congestion in the area parking lots. Gates will open one hour prior to the start of each contest.
