CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior tennis player Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) appears in the June 18 issue of Sports Illustrated in the magazine’s “Faces in the Crowd” section.
Devvarman was honored for winning the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship last month, becoming the first ACC men’s tennis player to win a national title. He finished the season ranked No. 1 nationally and was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Player of the Year. Devvarman finished the year with a 44-5 singles record, setting a new school record for singles wins in a season.
Next week, the Tennis Channel will air the tape-delay broadcast of the NCAA Singles Tournament final where Devvarman defeated Georgia’s John Isner 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 for the title. The match will debut on the network on Wednesday, June 20 at 8 p.m. and will re-air at midnight that night and on June 27 at 2 p.m.
