Devvarman Advances to Main Draw at Legg Mason Tennis Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Virginia men’s tennis player Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) advanced out of the qualifying draw to reach the main draw of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, held this week at the FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington. The 2007 NCAA Singles Champion is now in the 48-player draw that features eight of the top 50 players in the world.
Devvarman reached the main draw with a pair of victories in qualifying. On Saturday, he defeated Kamil Capkovic of Slovakia (No. 285 in the world) 6-2. 6-2 in the opening round. After rain postponed play on Sunday, he concluded his run in the qualifying draw on Monday with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Andre Sa of Brazil (No. 271 in the world).
Devvarman will begin play in the main draw on Tuesday as he plays Paul Goldstein (No. 101 in the world) in the first round. A native of the Washington area, Goldstein has been ranked as high as No. 58 in the world in his career. The winner of the match will meet the No. 15 seed Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic (No. 63 in the world) in the round of 32.
Devvarman will also play in the doubles draw of tournament, teaming with former Georgia All-American John Isner, who he defeated in the final of the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship. The duo received a wild card into the main draw where they will play the No. 2 seeded team of Martin Damm and Leander Paes on Tuesday. Damm and Paes won the 2006 U.S. Open Doubles Championship and both are ranked in the top ten of the world doubles rankings.
