Third-year Shannon Davis knows what to expect when it comes to preseason. This August has been particularly hot for the Cavaliers, but they are focused on working through the heat to prepare for their season-opener, scheduled for next Friday, Aug. 24.

How has this year been different than the first two summers?

You just kind of know what to expect and what kind of shape you need to come back in. It’s always exciting and this year we have five new people. So it’s fun to get back and find chemistry with them. Just get back in the gym. I think it’s more about experience than anything. The preseason is quality team time where we can get to know each other better.

What kinds of things did you do to get ready for preseason?

Coach gives us a summer workout. We aren’t required to be here, fortunately, it’s just do-it-on-your-own. You just go out there and work out everyday, lift, run, get yourself in the best shape you can. We are all different and have different body types. We each know how to get ourselves ready to go.

Is there a mental aspect of preparing for preseason?

I think this year, with the heat, it has been ridiculously hot. Just knowing that you are going to be sweating a lot, you’re going to be working hard. Also knowing that you are going to be sore. We are getting our volleyball legs back. You just have to be mentally ready to work hard and work through some soreness. Come back strong and make yourself a better player.

What are the expectations of preseason?

Just working hard, knowing that you are going to be sore and working through it. It is going to be tough the first few days getting the kinks out and getting back the chemistry and the rhythm of the team.

What are the goals for this season?

Definitely to make the NCAA Tournament. Win an ACC championship. But to start the season, we want to win the three tournaments we play in, before conference play even begins.
