THIS WEEK
Fifth-ranked Virginia opens exhibition play at Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, August 19. The teams take the field at Sports Backer Stadium at 7 p.m.

SCOUTING VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH
Virginia Commonwealth, under the guidance of 13th-year head coach Tim O’Sullivan, is coming off a tough 2006 season. The Rams finished 4-13-1 overall and 2-8-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, but the Black and Gold have reloaded with 15 new players and a stable of talented players back from the 2006 squad.

The Rams return three of their top four scorers with senior Matthijs Maruanaya leading the pack, along with fellow classmate Pat Viray and sophomore Owusu Sekyere. Maruanaya led the team with five goals, two assists, and 12 points in 2006. Viray was second with three goals and two assists, while Sekyere found the back of the net on three occasions for the Rams.

SERIES VS. VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH
In regular-season action, Virginia holds a 19-1-1 overall series edge over VCU. The teams last met in 2003 at Klöckner Stadium with the No. 12 Rams claiming their first win in the series, a 2-1 decision.

REYERING NAMED SEMIFINALIST FOR HERMANN TROPHY
Junior forward Yannick Reyering has been selected as one of 29 candidates named to the 2007 Hermann Trophy Watch List. The award is presented annually to the top men’s and women’s players in collegiate soccer.

IN THE POLLS
Virginia is ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA/adidas coaches’ preseason poll. UVa also stands No. 6 in the College Soccer News’ preseason poll.
