FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 11 Virginia women’s soccer team fell in its 2007 debut, suffering a 3-1 loss to No. 3 Notre Dame in an exhibition contest Thursday. The game was part of the National Soccer Festival, an annual exhibition in Fort Wayne that features some of the top men’s and women’s teams from across the country.
“We are obviously disappointed in the result, but we were able to take a lot from this game,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We did some good things and were able to get a lot of players some minutes. We created some quality scoring chances, but gave up an early goal and one right before halftime, both on restarts. That is something we hadn’t really worked on much so far this preseason, and it was the difference tonight. Overall, I am pleased with where we are and felt we probably deserved a better result tonight. It was typical hard-fought scrimmage between two good teams.”
Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) scored the goal for the Cavaliers. Rostedt, who was named to the Preseason Hermann Trophy Watch List has led Virginia in scoring in each of the past two seasons.
The Cavaliers conclude their preseason schedule on Sunday, as they host No. 10 Connecticut in an exhibition game at Klöckner Stadium. Game time is set for 2 p.m. Tickets for the exhibition game are $6 for reserved seats, $4 for adult general admission and $2 for youth, senior, and faculty/staff general admission.
