LAS VEGAS – The Virginia volleyball team (2-1, 0-0 ACC) suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 3-0 decision to UNLV late Saturday to conclude the Las Vegas Tournament. Fourth-year Sarah Kirkwood was named to the all-tournament team.
Virginia, UNLV and Texas Tech finished the event with 2-1 records while Arizona State went 0-3. By virtue of a tiebreaker, UNLV was awarded the tournament title with the fewest lost games.
“We didn’t play very well in that last game, but it was a good tournament,” Melissa Aldrich Shelton, Virginia head coach, said. “We played really well at times and know what we need to work on to win the next tournament.”
UNLV posted scores of 30-17, 30-27 and 30-20 to sweep the Cavaliers. The host Rebels hit .283 compared to a .100 percentage for UVa.
Second-year Lauren Dickson paced Virginia with 12 kills and newcomer Kelly Irvin tallied 11 digs. Kirkwood finished with nine kills and nine digs, while Beth Shelton added eight digs. Irvin finished with 19 assists and teammate Marlow Bruneau tallied 16 helpers.
The Cavaliers will play host to the Marriott Jefferson Cup next weekend at Memorial Gymnasium. Norfolk State and Temple will play the first match at 5 p.m. Friday with UVa and Arkansas playing in the nightcap at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
