CHARLOTTESVILLE – After inclement weather altered its preseason schedule several times, the Virginia men’s soccer team finally made its 2007 debut, downing South Florida 1-0 in an exhibition Sunday morning at Klöckner Stadium. Jeremy Barlow’s (Herndon, Va.) goal in the 21st minute was all the Cavaliers needed to post the victory.

“I was pleased with our play today,” head coach George Gelnovatch said. “I would have liked to get a second goal considering the amount of possession we had, but South Florida is a quality team. I am glad we were able to get this game in, because it was important for us to play at least one preseason game. We only started one freshman, but we still needed a game to get past the first game of the season nerves and be ready for the opener on Friday.”

Neither team had many chances until Barlow’s goal 21 minutes into the contest. Jonathan Villanueva (Grand Prairie, Texas) threaded a pass to find Barlow in open space and Barlow took a touch before firing a long distance shot just inside the far post.

In the second half, the Cavaliers went up a man in the 50th minute as South Florida’s Kevon Neaves received a red card for a harsh challenge. Although shorthanded, the Bulls had an opportunity to tie the game in the 73rd minute from the penalty spot. However, Virginia freshman goalkeeper Dan Louisignau (Wilmington, Del.) stopped Simon Schoendorf’s penalty kick attempt to preserve the shutout.

Virginia outshot South Florida 8-7 in the contest and had a 5-4 corner kick advantage. Michael Giallombardo (Manalapan, N.J.) made one save for Virginia in the first half, while Louisignau made two in the second half. Diego Restrepo made three saves for USF.

Virginia will open the regular season on August 31 when it hosts Columbia. Match time is 7:30 p.m. and will follow the Cavalier women’s match against Delaware, which starts at 5 p.m.
