CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 9 Virginia women’s soccer team kicked off the 2007 season with a 4-0 win over Delaware Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. Four different Cavaliers found the back of the net to give Virginia its eighth consecutive season opening win.
“We are very pleased with the result,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “I thought we weren’t as sharp as we were hoping for, which was probably a case of adrenaline, excitement, and nerves that come with a season opener. We got a chance for a lot of players see some time and that depth will help us later on. Now we have to get ready for a difficult stretch of our schedule, starting Sunday against West Virginia.”
The Cavaliers (1-0-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. Alex Singer (Rye, N.Y.) played a ball to Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) in space, who dribbled to the top of the 18 before firing a shot into the far upper corner. The game remained 1-0 at the half, despite Virginia having a 16-1 shot advantage.
In the second half, Virginia tallied three goals to make the final margin 4-0. In the 56th minute, Nikki Krzysik’s (Clifton, N.J.) long free kick into the box was flicked on by Meghan Lenczyk (McLean, Va.) to Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.), who slotted a ball past the keeper for her first collegiate goal. Ten minutes later, Rostedt’s cross found Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) at the penalty spot, and Quinn, dribbled around the outstretched goalie and scored in the vacated net. Virginia closed out the scoring in the 79th minute, as Alli Fries’ (Dublin, Ohio) throw-in was headed on by Krzysik to Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio), who turned a fired a shot inside the far post.
Virginia outshot Delaware 29-2 in the game and had an 18-0 corner kick advantage. Making her collegiate debut, redshirt freshman Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made two saves in goal to record her first career shutout. E.J. Goldman made seven saves for the Blue Hens.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, September 2 when they host No. 15 West Virginia. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is set for 2 p.m. The Virginia men’s team will follow at 5 p.m., as it hosts Richmond.
