LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) -Devin Moore rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown and Wyoming held Virginia to 110 total yards in a 23-3 victory Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
The Cavaliers (0-1) beat the Cowboys 13-12 in overtime last season in Charlottesville, thanks to a missed extra point by Wyoming. But the Cavs couldn’t escape this season – and they couldn’t run at all against Wyoming. Virginia had 7 yards on the ground.
Moore ran for a 49-yard touchdown midway through the fourth to put Wyoming ahead 20-3.
Three plays later, Julius Stinson intercepted Virginia’s Jameel Sewell for the second time, setting up a drive that ended with Billy Vinnedge 39-yard field goal.
Karsten Sween was 25-for-34 for 253 yards and a TD for Wyoming.
Sewell was 11 of 23 for 82 yards and Cedric Peerman was held to 18 yards on seven carries for the Cavaliers.
Wyoming went ahead 13-3 when Vinnedge made a 40-yard field goal in the third quarter. Vinnedge also had a 48-yard field goal.
Greg Bolling grabbed a 4-yard pass from Sween for a touchdown early in the second and a 10-0 lead for the Cowboys lead. It was only Bolling’s second career reception.
Chris Gould kicked a 42-yard field goal to give the Cavaliers their only points as the first-half clock ran out.
