CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team (3-2, 0-0 ACC) swept Norfolk State 3-0 Saturday in the fourth match of the 2007 Marriott Jefferson Cup at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers won 30-21, 30-15 and 30-19 for their first sweep of the season.
Fourth year Sarah Kirkwood inched closer to Virginia’s kills record against Norfolk State. She needs 32 kills to break the mark after tallying a game-high 22 against the Spartans.
The Cavaliers hit .314, with Kirkwood posting a .525 percentage with just one attack error to accompany her 22 kills.
Beth Shelton paced UVa with 10 digs while third year Marlow Bruneau and rookie Kelly Irvin split the setting duties. Irvin finished with 22 helpers and Bruneau added 15.
First year A.J. Cushman made her Cavalier debut, earning the starting nod at libero. The Richmond native fired across an ace on her first career service and fittingly ended the first game with another ace. Cushman led Virginia with five aces in the match, while Kirkwood tallied four and Katie Oakes had three. Oakes also added five blocks in the victory.
Virginia will wrap up the 2007 Marriott Jefferson Cup at 7 p.m. Saturday against Temple. The Owls were defeated by Arkansas 3-2 in the first match of the morning session. The Spartans will battle the Razorbacks at 5 p.m.
