Cavaliers in Third Place After Opening of Topy Cup

Fukushima Prefecture, Japan – Virginia sophomore Whitney Neuhauser shot 1-over 73 to lead the Cavaliers after the opening round of play at the Topy Cup being held at Tanagura Country Club in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The Cavaliers are in third place in the five-team field, just ahead of Denver, the other American collegiate team competing in this year’s event. The tournament is UV’a first outing under the direction of new coach Kim Lewellen.
Virginia shot 11-over 299 and trails Nihon University by 10 shots. Hosei University is second at 298 while Denver is one stroke behind the Cavaliers at 300. Naguya University of Commerce is in fifth place at 312.
Neuhauser’s score has her tied for eight overall. She is four shots behind Yoshimi Tamura, who leads the field playing as an individual for Meiji University with a 3-under 69. Carly Truitt and Lene Krog both carded 75s and are in 11th place. Jennie Arseneault shot 76 and is 14th position. Kristen Simpson shot 77 and is tied for 17th.
The tournament is the first for Krog who transferred to UVa after playing two seasons at East Carolina where Lewellen was the head coach before accepting the position at Virginia.
Play continues with the second round scheduled for Wednesday and the final 18 holes on Thursday.
