Virginia Men's Soccer Downed at SMU

DALLAS – The No. 3 ranked Virginia men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, falling to No. 9 SMU 5-1 on the first night of the SMU Mi Cocina Classic. The loss drops the Cavaliers’ record to 2-1-0 on the season.
The Mustangs (1-0-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of play on Scott Corbin’s goal, which was assisted by Jeff Harwell. SMU added another just before the break as Ryan Mirsky scored on an assist from Bruno Guarda to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Virginia cut the advantage in half in the 54th minute as Neil Barlow (Langley, Va.) scored on an assist from Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.). However, SMU got goals from Leone Cruz in the 59th minute, Guarda in the 81st minute, and Richard Oliva in the 86th minute to make the final score 5-1.
SMU outshot the Cavaliers 15-6 in the contest and had a 6-2 corner kick advantage. Michael Giallombardo (Manalapan, N.J.) made four saves for Virginia, while Steve Sandbo made three for SMU.
Virginia will conclude play in Texas on Sunday, as it plays Tulsa at the tournament. That contest is slated for noon CT.
