Virginia postgame notes at North Carolina, Sept. 15, 2007

The Cavaliers wore all white uniforms today for the first time since the Florida State game last year.

Jared Detrick became the fifth true freshman to play for the Cavaliers this season. He made his first appearance on the kickoff team. He made the tackle on the play, all career firsts.

Redshirt freshmen S Rico Bell, LB John Bivens and G B.J. Cabell also made their first career appearance this afternoon. Bell was in on the punt return unit, Bivens appeared on the kickoff return team and Cabbell on the field goal kick team.

FB Rashawn Jackson’s 4-yard reception on UVa’s opening drive is the first catch of his career. He played linebacker last season before moving to fullback in the spring.

The Cavaliers’ touchdown on the opening drive marks the second consecutive game they have scored a TD on their first possession.

Cedric Peerman’s 1-yard run on the opening drive is UVa’s first road touchdown since the East Carolina game last year.

Chris Gould had his first touchback kickoff of the season following UVa’s first touchdown. Last year he had 21 touchbacks on 42 kickoffs.

Gould’s 51-yard field goal in the first quarter is the longest of his career. His previous long was 48 yards at Pittsburgh last year. It is the longest by a Cavalier since Connor Hughes booted a 52-yarder vs. NC State in 2003.

Gould tied the school record with five field goals. Rafael Garcia kicked five vs. Virginia Tech in 1994 and Connor Hughes vs. Georgia Tech in 2003.

Cedric Peerman had a long rushing play of 38 yards, his second long run of the season. He also had a 58-yard run vs. Duke last week. Last season Virginia’s longest run from scrimmage by a running back was Jason Snelling’s 29-yard run vs. East Carolina. QB Jameel Sewell had the longest run last season; 36 yards (TD) vs. Maryland. That was the Cavaliers’ only run of more than 30 yards last fall.

Peerman went over 100 yards rushing for the second week in a row for his second career 100-yard game. He is the first Cavalier to have back-to-back 100-yard games since Alvin Pearman had three in a row in 2004 (223-Duke, 170-Maryland, 106-Miami).

Peerman’s total today is a career high. He had 137 yards last week vs. Duke. It is also the most by a Cavalier since Alvin Pearman rushed for 223 yards vs. Duke in 2004.

Virginia scored on its first four possessions today (TD, FG, FG, FG). This is the first time the Cavaliers have scored on as many as four straight possessions in a road game since scoring on six straight possessions in a 45-33 loss at Maryland in 2005 (TD, TD, FG, FG, FG, FG).

DE Chris Long had a sack for the third game in a row. He now has five this season, a career-high.

Long also had his first career interception. Defensive linemen have two of UVa’s three interceptions this season.
