Charlottesville–Virginia third-year field hockey student-athlete Lucy Meyers was named the National Player of the Week by womensfieldhockey.com after helping the Cavaliers to two key wins over the weekend. The Hoos defeated William & Mary 2-1 on Friday before upsetting No. 7 James Madison 3-1 on Sunday. Meyers helped the Virginia defense shut down both teams in the second half, allowing each just one shot in the second stanza of their respective games. At the other end of the field, Meyers scored both goals in the William & Mary game and scored a goal and added an assist in the James Madison game.

Meyers notched both goals on short corners as Virginia defeated the Tribe 2-1 on Friday. The Cavaliers did not surrender a short corner to William & Mary in the second half, and allowed only one shot to hold off the Tribe in the second half.

Meyers opened up the scoring in the James Madison game as well, notching a goal by tipping a Kaitlyn Hiltz offering into the cage on a short corner in the first half of play. Again Meyers and the rest of the defense kept the opponent from threatening in the second half, allowing just one shot and one short corner in the second half. Meyers also assisted on Virginia’s third goal, setting up All-American Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn to give the Hoos an insurance goal.

The honor for Virginia marks the second consecutive week that the Cavaliers have been recognized by the organization; Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn was named to the National Honor Roll for her play at the Catamount Sheraton Classic last week.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday as the Cavaliers host ACC-rival Boston College on Saturday, September 22. Game time against the Eagles is 1 p.m. at University Hall Turf Field. The Hoos will also host Boston University on Sunday Sept. 23, also at 1 p.m.
